Twisting Your Way to a Stronger Core: Ditch the Crunches with These Rotational Exercises

If you're one of my personal training clients hankering for stronger core muscles without the monotony of crunches, then buckle up! Your favorite rotational exercises are here to save the day.

Why bask in the glory of simple forward-bending like crunches when your core muscles are responsible for so much more? Indeed, your core muscles aid in those daily rotational movements that keep you resilient and injury-free.

"Our lives are woven into rotational motions, making rotational exercises all the more essential to bolster our bodies' defenses and fend off accidents," asserts physical therapist and personal trainer Christynne Helfrich from Hinge Health.

In my quest for the ultimate core workout, I've previously featured some cracking rotational exercises. A recent find that tickles the fancy, however, is Danica Osborn's six-move standing abs workout, brimming with weighted rotational goodies.

Conquering Osborn's Core Workout

In the spirit of sharing, here's a glimpse at Danica Osborn's jaw-dropping workout, which she posted on her Instagram:

Osborn takes the reins with an 18lb (8kg) kettlebell, but remember to pick a weight that suits your capability. Beginners, start with a 9lb weight, and shoot for 30-45 seconds or 10-12 reps, aiming for 2-3 rounds. Don't own a kettlebell? A dumbbell will suffice, but you could save some dough with this Bowflex SelectTech 840 adjustable kettlebell currently reduced from $149 to $129.99 on Amazon.

Why Rotational Strength Matters

Granted, this workout foregoes the quest for a perfectly defined midriff, but scoring a body that can confidently tackle life's hurdles is where it's genuinely at.

According to Helfrich, "Dreadful pain from performing seemingly mundane tasks is all too common in my patients. Much of this pain could have been evaded by proper functional training."

Core-specific rotational exercises such as those targeting the obliques guard your torso, crucial for daily activities like unloading the dishwasher or carting laundry from the washer to the dryer.
