Women: Know Your Breasts to Detect Abnormalities Early

Women are urged to familiarise themselves with their breast tissue to aid early detection of any abnormalities. A lump in the breast, feeling irregular, hard, firm, and non-movable, could signal a warning sign.

During monthly self-examinations, women should pay close attention to any changes in size, shape, or consistency. Key features to consider when detecting lumps include size, shape, consistency, mobility, borders, and associated symptoms like nipple discharge or skin changes. Even painless lumps should not be ignored. Regular self-exams help develop a sense of normal breast texture and enable quick reaction to changes. Early detection is crucial as it significantly improves healing chances and treatment options. Recognising changes such as skin changes, retractions, infections, nipple discharge, or pain is vital. Breast self-exam should be done in a well-lit room, in front of a mirror, and include visual examination and gentle palpation of the breast and armpits.

Regular breast self-exams, along with professional check-ups, are vital for early detection of breast cancer. Women should know how a lump in the breast feels and be prepared to consult a doctor if they notice any changes or irregularities.
