Nitrous oxide campaign initiated in Frankfurt - "What is Merkste?" - Frankfurt launches a campaign against laughing gas (nitrous oxide)

The city of Frankfurt am Main is taking a step forward in addressing a growing concern among its youth population. On August 19, Frankfurt will launch a campaign called "Notice anything?" to combat the spread of laughing gas among young people.

The campaign, styled in a computer game format, features scenes from a fictional world with heroes and heroines named Frankforce. The aim is to raise awareness of the risks and dangers associated with laughing gas, a substance often associated with environmental and health concerns due to its greenhouse gas properties and potential for misuse.

Last year, Frankfurt Waste Management and Service GmbH (FES) collected and disposed of 6,000 cartridges of laughing gas. Tina Zapf-Rodríguez, the Green city councilor for climate, environment, and women, stated that many young people and young adults consume laughing gas.

While the campaign does not provide information about the potential health risks associated with laughing gas, it does highlight the dangers of its misuse. FES Managing Director Benjamin Scheffler estimates that one in five laughing gas cartridges is not completely empty, posing risks.

Consumption of laughing gas is not only risky to health but also burdens the city and the climate. It is being consumed publicly in various locations such as school playgrounds, parties, parks, green spaces, and residential entrances.

In response to this issue, Scheffler and Rodriguez-Zapf advocate for a nationwide deposit obligation for gas cartridges from 200 milliliters. This proposal aims to encourage responsible use and recycling of gas cartridges.

Previously, Frankfurt banned the sale of laughing gas to children and young people, as well as the consumption of the intoxicant in public places. However, the current campaign does not mention any penalties or consequences for those who are found to be consuming laughing gas in public.

If a partially filled laughing gas container were to explode in the waste-to-energy plant, it could damage the grate or the lining of the furnace, causing the plant to shut down for repairs. This underscores the importance of proper disposal and recycling of laughing gas cartridges.

The campaign's primary objectives include environmental protection and public health. By reducing nitrous oxide emissions, the campaign contributes to combating climate change. Minimizing misuse can help prevent health issues associated with recreational use.

However, the campaign does not currently mention any specific measures or strategies beyond raising awareness about the risks of laughing gas. It remains to be seen how the city will address the enforcement challenges and economic impact of implementing and enforcing regulations, such as a deposit obligation. Nonetheless, the launch of this campaign marks a significant step in addressing the issue of laughing gas misuse among Frankfurt's youth.

  1. In an effort to expand their policies, the Community policy of Frankfurt am Main could include a section addressing the misuse of laughing gas, focusing on the health-and-wellness implications and potential environmental consequences due to its greenhouse gas properties.
  2. Learning from the successful implementation of the employment policy against the sale of laughing gas to minors, the city could consider applying similar strategies to the health-and-wellness sector, promoting mental-health education and awareness about the dangers of laughing gas.
  3. To address the issue of climate-change and protect the environment, Frankfurt could develop an environmental-science-based policy focusing on the proper disposal and recycling of laughing gas cartridges, potentially implementing a deposit obligation to encourage responsible usage.
