In a recent evaluation of vegan ice cream alternatives, the popular brand Cremissimo Bourbon Vanille received an "inadequate" grade from Oeko-Test. This negative assessment was primarily due to the use of palm oil sourced from plantations associated with significant environmental and social concerns.

The Oeko-Test, a well-known consumer organisation, criticised the palm oil used in Cremissimo ice cream for contributing to deforestation, habitat destruction, and problematic labor practices. These practices conflict with the environmental and ethical standards expected in vegan and sustainable products.

Despite receiving a "very good" grade in the sensory discipline, the overall result for Cremissimo ice cream was based mainly on the ingredients. The lab found significantly increased levels of saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOSH-analogues) in Cremissimo ice cream. These substances have been linked to organ damage in animal studies, although their long-term effects on humans are unknown.

Carrageenan, a thickener obtained from red algae, was also found in Cremissimo ice cream. Although carrageenan is probably not absorbed by the body, it is suspected of promoting allergies. In animal studies, negative effects on the digestive tract and immune system have been found for carrageenan.

Interestingly, the Mövenpick Urban Moments Cherry Brownie also performed poorly in the Oeko-Test. The lab found traces of MOSH in this product, but they were not downgraded by Oeko-Test. Additionally, the Mövenpick ice cream received criticism in the sensory discipline as well.

However, the test results indicate that not all vegan ice cream products are of poor quality. Five out of twelve tested alternatives received the grade "very good". Other cult brands have disappeared from the shelves, unlike the Cremissimo ice cream.

For those interested in the full test results, they can be found on the Oeko-Test website (paid). It's essential to be aware that vegan ice cream, like any other food product, can vary greatly in quality, and it's crucial to make informed choices based on reliable sources like Oeko-Test.

The Oeko-Test, a consumer organization focused on health-and-wellness and lifestyle, evaluated various vegan ice cream brands, including Cremissimo and Mövenpick. They criticized the use of palm oil in Cremissimo for its environmental and social impacts, conflicts with vegan and sustainable product standards. Despite getting a "very good" grade in taste, Cremissimo's overall score was affected by increased levels of saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons, linked to organ damage in animals, and carrageenan, a suspect allergen and potential digestive tract irritant. Mövenpick Urban Moments Cherry Brownie also showed traces of MOSH, but managed to avoid a downgrade. Five out of twelve tested vegan ice cream alternatives received the highest grade, indicating that not all products in the food-and-drink sector are of low quality. It's crucial to research and make informed decisions based on reliable sources like Oeko-Test when it comes to health, wellness, and choosing sustainable supplements and therapies-and-treatments.
