Virginia Vet Hospitalized After Shower Door Explodes, Highlighting Tempered Glass Risks
Kevin Caple, a Virginia military veteran, was severely injured when his shower door suddenly shattered, sending him to the hospital for surgery. The shower door, supplied by Cardinal Glass Industries, was made of tempered glass, which can pose serious risks when damaged.
Caple was left with deep cuts on his foot and hand, requiring immediate stitches. Unfortunately, the extent of his injuries necessitated further surgery, including a tendon repair using a tendon from another toe. The incident occurred when Caple was simply using his shower, highlighting the unexpected danger of tempered glass shower doors.
Tempered glass, while strong, can shatter into sharp pieces when broken, posing a significant risk to residents. According to estimates, between 2012 and 2016, there were approximately 2,300 emergency department visits in the U.S. related to shattered glass shower doors. Caple managed to make it to his couch after the incident, where he waited for emergency medical services.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards of tempered glass shower doors. Caple's injuries, which required surgery, underscore the importance of safety considerations in home design and the need for robust product safety standards.
