HA NOI – In a significant move to bolster Vietnam's healthcare system and enhance public awareness about disease prevention, particularly through immunization, the Vietnam Administration of Disease Prevention and French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis have forged a partnership.

On May 27, the two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Ha Noi, outlining their plans to collaborate on various activities aimed at strengthening healthcare capacity and improving public understanding of disease prevention across the lifespan.

Key aspects of their cooperation include a review, evaluation, and proposal of policy solutions related to vaccine utilization in Vietnam. They will also develop guidelines and recommendations for immunization, and run communication and educational campaigns to heighten awareness of essential and next-generation vaccines.

These efforts aim to provide effective disease prevention measures for various age groups.

The MoU stipulates clear roles and responsibilities for both parties. The Administration of Disease Prevention assumes a leading role, with responsibilities that include strategic oversight, content direction, and monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of cooperation activities. Sanofi, meanwhile, will seek suitable domestic and international partners, suppliers, and experts for all initiatives and provide financial support according to a predetermined plan, in compliance with Vietnamese law.

The Memorandum of Understanding forms the basis for activities that will support the evaluation, review, and proposal of vaccination policies, as well as the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). Initiated in 1985, the EPI has achieved impressive results, achieving consistent full vaccination rates of over 95% for children under one year old. This has led to the eradication of polio in 2000, neonatal tetanus in 2005, and significant reductions in measles, whooping cough, and diphtheria incidence and mortality rates.

According to the Government roadmap under Resolution No 104/NQ-CP, the EPI will continue to expand its vaccine portfolio, contributing to improved public health and prevention of epidemics. As a leading developer of preventive solutions against diseases such as Haemophilus influenzae type b, polio, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis A and B, meningococcal disease, influenza, and others, Sanofi is poised to support these efforts. The company sells over one billion doses of vaccines worldwide every year.
