The Hastings Center for Bioethics has dropped a bomb (okay, a strategic plan) that shook the scientific community at its public event in New York on April 24! This epic bash at Rockefeller University had folks in person and streaming like crazy for the Daniel Callahan Annual Lecture.
The epic event, marking the unveiling of "The Hastings Center Vision: A Kick-ass Path Forward for Bioethics," featured none other than our Queen Vardit Ravitsky, ex-CEO and founder of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Joshua Boger, New York Times health and science reporter, Gina Kolata. They talked all things strategic plan and why it's a game-changer for today's challenges. Boger gave a lowdown from the pharma industry perspective, while Kolata spilled the beans from journalism land[2]. Check out the event video here[3].
The strategic plan places emphasis on three core areas of The Hastings Center: research, publications, and engagement. It also lays down the organization's vision, mission, and commitment to six badass values: independent thinking, justice and equity, diversity and inclusion, rigor and excellence, relevance and impact, and integrity and guts[4].
To own the mission, the strategic plan sets goals for research, publications, engagement, and financial sustainability.
"In today's world of cray-cray changes, cutting-edge tech, continued health disparities, and a crazy-polarized globe, The Hastings Center needs to re-up its game as the go-to bioethics leader," write Ravitsky and Board Chair, Joseph J. Fins in the strategic plan's introd.
In a yearlong process that brought together a hot crew of national, international experts, The Hastings Center Task Force crafted this plan[5]. The strategic plan has even rebranded the org as The Hastings Center for Bioethics for broader appeal. "Formerly known as 'The Institute for the Study of Ethics and the Life Sciences' (sounds dull, huh?), then 'The Hastings Center' in '85, our new moniker is, like, so 90s—'for bioethics!' It clarifies our mission for the masses. In case you're wondering, bioethics is a broad field and we're here for it!"[6]
The strategic plan: it's what's poppin' for advancing the realm of bioethics and taking on the big issues facing our healthcare today. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates from The Hastings Center.

Enrichment Data:The Hastings Center, a prominent voice in bioethics, has rolled out its five-year strategic plan. The event highlighted the emphasis on research, publications, and engagement, along with a commitment to key values[4]. The Task Force, involving staff members, board members, fellows, and external colleagues, crafted this plan after a nationwide and global consultation[5]. The strategic plan also signifies a branding change, renaming the organization to The Hastings Center for Bioethics for broader recognition[6]. The specific details of the plan's objectives and initiatives remain to be seen, necessitating consultation of official Hastings Center publications or announcements post-event for a comprehensive understanding[1].
The Hastings Center's strategic plan emphasizes the importance of research, publications, and engagement in the field of bioethics, addressing medical-conditions and health-and-wellness, especially in light of advanced technology and the changing world. This plan is a game-changer for today's challenges as it seeks to rebrand The Hastings Center for broader appeal, targeting the broader bioethics community.
