Hamburg - The blaze at the Marienkrankenhaus in Hohenfelde has claimed three lives and left dozens injured. On June 1st, a 72-year-old patient was arrested on suspicion of causing the inferno. The police confirmed his arrest on Sunday evening, with plans to present him before a judge on Monday.

The arson suspicion stems from the questioning of witnesses. Police are currently investigating whether the suspect was under the influence of a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.

The hospital fire occurred on the ground floor of the geriatric ward, specifically designed for the elderly. firefighters combatted the blaze and managed to extinguish it within 20 minutes. Rescue measures came to fruition in the morning as parts of the hospital were evacuated. The critically injured were treated at the emergency room, while others were transported to nearby hospitals.

The remaining care areas remained unaffected and continued regular operations.

A fire investigator from the state criminal police arrived on site to secure evidence. The area was cordoned off with red and white tape.

The Marienkrankenhaus is one of the largest denominational hospitals in northern Germany and treats approximately 93,000 patients each year.

Hospital Administration: Seeking Swift Clarification

Christoph Schmitz, the hospital's business manager, emphasized that they are cooperating closely with authorities to uncover the truth behind the incident and ensuring the safety of patients in the long run. The patients' safety remains the top priority, he stated. Emergency measures were implemented to prevent any further incidents.

Authorities Promise Prompt Investigation

Hamburg's Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) urged a thorough and swift investigation of the fire, aiming to fortify protection measures. Meanwhile, he expressed gratitude towards the emergency services for their heroic work under trying conditions. Grote expressed his sympathies to the families of the victims and the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery.

Archbishop Stefan Heße was similarly saddened and shocked by the incident. He appealed to congregations to pray for the deceased, injured, relatives, and hospital staff during Sunday services. Heße later visited the hospital.
