The swimming lake at the Vlotho campsite in Vlotho-Borlefzen has reopened to bathers following a two-week ban due to the presence of blue-green algae. The ban was lifted on September 3, 2025, after measures were taken on-site to address the issue.

The swimming lake in Borlefzen is classified as an "EU bathing lake" under the EU Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EG), which monitors the water quality of larger bodies of water with a high number of bathers. However, the growth of blue-green algae in the lake poses a risk to swimmers, potentially causing skin irritation, redness, or rashes.

The development of blue-green algae in the lake may have been due to a combination of the low water level of the Weser and the stillness of the lake caused by the low inflow. The district health department had ordered the bathing ban two weeks prior due to the detection of blue-green algae in the water.

To combat the issue, aeration pumps were used to increase the oxygen content of the lake water, and a so-called "mowing boat" was employed to remove the algae. The latest water samples showed no exceedance of limit values, and no blue-green algae are currently visible in the water.

The monitoring of the water quality at the swimming lake is carried out monthly by the district health department. Despite the temporary closure for bathing, other facilities at the campsite in Borlefzen remained open during the closure period.

It is worth noting that the swimming lake in Borlefzen remains open even when the swimming lake is closed for bathing. This means that visitors can still enjoy the facilities and surroundings, but are advised to avoid direct contact with the water until it is declared safe for swimming.

The previous person responsible for the order of the swimming ban at the campsite swimming pool in Vlotho-Borlefzen on September 3, 2025, was the local health authority or the municipal administration responsible for public safety. The reopening of the swimming lake marks a return to normal operations at the Vlotho campsite, providing a welcome respite for campers and swimmers alike.
