The swimming lake in Borlefzen is classified as an "EU bathing lake" under the EU Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EG), which monitors the water quality of larger bodies of water with a high number of bathers. However, the growth of blue-green algae in the lake poses a risk to swimmers, potentially causing skin irritation, redness, or rashes.
The development of blue-green algae in the lake may have been due to a combination of the low water level of the Weser and the stillness of the lake caused by the low inflow. To combat the issue, aeration pumps were used to increase the oxygen content of the lake water, and a so-called "mowing boat" was employed to remove the algae. The latest water samples showed no exceedance of limit values, and no blue-green algae are currently visible in the water.
The monitoring of the water quality at the swimming lake is carried out monthly by the district health department. Despite the temporary closure for bathing, other facilities at the campsite in Borlefzen remained open during the closure period.
