In a shocking turn of events, Dr. Suhail Anjum, a 44-year-old anesthetist, found himself in hot water after an incident that occurred at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, UK, in September 2023.

The General Medical Council (GMC), the UK medical licensing authority, examined the case of Dr. Anjum, who was accused of leaving a sedated patient during gallbladder surgery to have sex with a nurse in another room. The medical tribunal, after a thorough investigation, issued a warning but imposed no penalty.

During the hearing, Dr. Anjum expressed remorse for his actions, admitting they may have put the patient at risk. He described his behavior as "disgraceful" and stated that it was a "one-off mistake". The doctor also expressed his desire to continue his career in the UK and promised to learn from this incident.

The tribunal chair, in a statement to "The Guardian", said that the doctor's actions were serious enough to amount to misconduct but did not compromise the patient's safety. The tribunal was convinced that Dr. Anjum was determined not to repeat his misconduct, and the risk of recurrence was assessed as "very low".

The incident occurred during a "stressful time" in Dr. Anjum's personal life, following the premature birth of his daughter. The doctor moved to Pakistan after being fired from his position in February 2024.

The tribunal was satisfied that a public finding of misconduct was sufficient to maintain public confidence in the profession. No sanctions were imposed, and the doctor was given a warning. The doctor stated that he sincerely apologizes to all involved.

The tribunal's decision comes as Dr. Anjum is seeking a new UK position. The case serves as a reminder of the high standards expected of medical professionals and the consequences of falling short of those expectations.
