Daycare staff shortages lead to demonstrations in Potsdam and Cottbus - Staff Shortage Led to Demonstrations in Potsdam and Cottbus
The union folk are making noise about the staffing crisis in Brandenburg's kindergartens, and Verdi, the United Service Sector Union, is leading the charge in Potsdam and Cottbus.
Marco Bedrich, the regional manager of Verdi in Cottbus, ain't fucking around when he says, "Educators can't do their actual social-pedagogical tasks." The truth is, sick leave ain't factored into the staffing ratio, and that shit needs to change.
Throughout the day, they'll be protests in both Cottbus and Potsdam, part of an action day called "Kita-Collapse"—aimed at highlighting the structural issues in child day care and demanding concrete improvements.
Now, the previous state government agreed on a staffing ratio of 1:4 as a long-term goal. But with the new government, there are concerns. Even as the number of kids decreases, it's crucial for the SPD and BSW-led state government to hold on to that goal. It'd create job security for educators and ease their workload.
