Sochi will undertake 93 exploration trips to regions where endangered plant species from the Red Book can be found.

In the heart of Russia, Sochi stands as the country's only subtropical city. Nestled amidst its lush landscapes, the city is home to a diverse array of unique and rare plant species that are the focus of the Sochi Red Book project.

This regional nature conservation initiative, aimed at documenting, protecting, and promoting awareness about endangered plant species in the Sochi region and nearby Caucasus area, has identified 93 forest-covered territories, including areas where red-listed plant species thrive.

The project, which is supported by the Presidential Fund for Nature, will conduct 93 expeditions from September 2025 to August 2028. The purpose of these expeditions is to survey these natural territories, with the aim of locating plants from the Red Book of Russia and the Red Book of Krasnodar Krai.

The identified territories, which host red-listed plant species, are slated for expansion of public green spaces. The expeditions are expected to help grant protected status to these identified territories, thereby promoting conservation efforts that protect these species in their natural habitats.

Alexander Ginkovsky, Director of the Department of Environmental Protection, Green Space, Agriculture, and Industry of the Sochi Administration, has emphasized the importance of protecting the natural territories due to the unique and rare plant species found in Sochi.

The expansion of public green spaces will incorporate these identified territories, enhancing the city's overall biodiversity and providing a haven for these endangered species. The project also aims to raise public awareness and engage the local community and stakeholders in biodiversity preservation.

The Sochi Red Book project follows a Russian and international tradition of "Red Data Books" that list threatened species to guide conservation policy and action. For detailed, up-to-date specifics about the Sochi Red Book project, it is recommended to check environmental organizations, government conservation departments, or scientific institutions based in Russia focused on Caucasian flora conservation.

The Sochi Red Book project, a regional nature conservation initiative, focuses on both science and health-and-wellness, as it aims to protect and promote awareness about endangered plant species in the Sochi region and nearby Caucasus area. The project also integrates environmental-science, especially through its expeditions, which will survey forest-covered territories slated for the expansion of public green spaces, to protect these red-listed species in their natural habitats.
