Six Risk Groups for Cardiometabolic Complications in Older Adults Identified
Researchers at the German Diabetes Center (DDZ) and Helmholtz Munich have identified six distinct risk groups for cardiometabolic complications in older adults without type 2 diabetes. The study, published in Cardiovascular Diabetology, highlights the importance of early risk differentiation for precise prevention and detection.
The study, led by the Kardiometabolic Research Group, used data from the KORA F4/FF4 population study involving 843 people aged 61 to 82 without diabetes. They found six clusters with varying risks for type 2 diabetes and related complications such as chronic kidney disease, nerve damage, and cardiovascular diseases. Notably, clusters 3, 4, 5, and 6 had a significantly higher incidence of new type 2 diabetes cases compared to cluster 2.
To quantify inflammation, the team derived an 'inflammatory burden' index from 73 inflammatory markers. Cluster 5 showed the highest burden, indicating a strong link between inflammation and disease risk. This mirrors findings in middle-aged populations, suggesting that these risk groups are consistent across age groups.
The study, published on 19 February 2025 (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1186/s12933-025-02617-8), emphasizes the importance of early differentiation of risk groups in older adults. This could enable tailored prevention strategies and early detection of type 2 diabetes and related complications. Press contact: Dr. Olaf Spörkel, Telephone: 0211-33-82-507, Email: [email protected]
