German Government Appoints Virologist Hendrik Streeck as Drug Czar

The German federal government has named virologist and CDU parliament member Hendrik Streeck as its new Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues, commonly known as the "Drug Czar," effective immediately. The appointment was announced by Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) following the cabinet's decision on Wednesday.

In his new role, Streeck, age 47, will take over from SPD politician Burkhard Blienert. The new commissioner for affairs pertaining to sexual and gender diversity is Sophia Koch, a 31-year-old member of the Saxon SPD state parliament. Notably, the black-red coalition government has terminated 25 out of the previous 43 commissioner positions, representing more than half of the total.

Streeck, who has been a member of the Bundestag since the last election, expressed his enthusiasm for the position, stating, "I do not wish to blame but to help, inform, and act, focusing on an evidence-based, preventive, and human-centric drug policy." In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, he often advocated for less stringent protective measures. For a short period, he was also considered as a potential successor for the federal health minister.

As Drug Czar, Streeck will lead national strategies for addiction policy and patient care across Germany, with his position within the Federal Ministry of Health enabling him to directly influence relevant policies at the federal and state levels. A key objective is to streamline regulations and policies regarding addiction issues, such as drug use and gambling, to improve coordination between federal and state-level authorities.

Streeck’s extensive medical background is expected to aid in the depolarization of the emotionally charged drug debate. His appointment aims to solidify efforts towards addressing addiction challenges in Germany's decentralized healthcare system, where states retain significant autonomy.

Meanwhile, Sophie Koch takes up the role of Commissioner for Acceptance of Sexual and Gender Diversity. Her appointment comes at a crucial time with the work of the federal commissioner becoming increasingly significant. State Minister Petra Köpping highlighted the importance of having a strong Saxon voice to champion the rights and interests of the queer community in Berlin.

The newly created Ministry of Digitalization and State Modernization will manage the list of all commissioner positions once decisions have been reached for every position. The black-red coalition government has carried out more than half of the promised reduction in the number of commissioners, exceeding the target established in their coalition agreement.
