RMIT Study Reveals Rapid Growth and Gender Imbalance in Australia's Booming Cyber Security Industry
RMIT University's latest research illuminates the gender balance in Australia's burgeoning cyber security sector. The study, backed by the Australian Signals Directorate, seeks to provide a clearer picture of the industry's size and diversity, with women comprising around 17% of cyber security-specific roles.
The cyber security sector has witnessed remarkable growth, expanding by 230% since 2016. While men's employment has nearly tripled, women's employment has grown nearly fourfold in the same period, outpacing men. Despite this progress, women still make up only 17% of these roles, according to the 2021 Australian Census.
RMIT's research aims to understand the barriers and facilitators to women's participation in the Australian cyber security sector. The insights will empower industry partners, including the Australian Women in Security Network (AWSN), to foster a more inclusive profession and broaden the talent pool. The sector is projected to need an additional 7000 practitioners by 2024, but the workforce has already surpassed this forecast.
