Redesigned seating arrangements for major city hubs
In the heart of Koblenz, a new public awareness initiative has been introduced, aiming to combat violence against women. The campaign, titled "Against Violence Against Women," features specially designed benches placed strategically in city squares.
These benches serve as information and message carriers, raising awareness about domestic violence and offering support to victims. Each bench is equipped with a helpline number, providing immediate assistance to those in need.
The initiative has gained the support of several local organisations, including the municipal enterprise, the Equal Opportunities Office, and the University of Koblenz. Notable figures such as Dr. Andreas Lukas, the Building Commissioner, and Dr. Berit Gebel-Sauer, among others, have been actively involved in the project.
The idea for the benches was advocated by members of various Koblenz clubs, including Zonta, Soroptimists, Inner Wheel, Lions Club Sophie von Laroche, and Rotary Mittelrhein. Six benches have been installed across the city, with one of them being placed in front of the University of Koblenz.
The colour orange, a signal for the worldwide action "orange your world - no violence against women," has been used in the design of these benches. The initiative's creators have stated that their action has gained sad and shocking relevance, reflecting the increasing reports of violent crimes against girls and women, as reported by the Federal Criminal Police Office.
These benches not only provide additional resting and seating opportunities but also offer places for conversation and socializing. They serve as a visible reminder of the ongoing fight against violence against women, encouraging open dialogue and support within the community.
For those interested in learning more about this initiative or getting involved, it is recommended to consult Koblenz city official websites, local news, or reach out to women's rights organisations in Koblenz directly.
Other supported organizations, such as the health-and-wellness and womens-health departments, have expressed their interest in partnering with the initiative, aiming to further promote women's health and well-being within the community.
The benches' design, using the color orange for global awareness, also incorporates elements of science, symbolizing the combined efforts of various sectors working towards a common goal of ending violence against women.
