The Children's Clinic Marl: A New Beacon of Pediatric Care in Marl

The Knappschaft Clinics Paracelsus Marl is set to open a new Children's Clinic on August 4, 2025, providing specialized pediatric care for children from Marl and the surrounding area. Dr. med. Andreas Wemhöner has been appointed as the chief physician, taking over from Dr. med. Mirco Kuhnigk on October 1, 2025.

The Children's Clinic Marl will offer a full range of pediatric and adolescent medicine, with a focus on neurological rehabilitation and treatment for children with congenital disorders of the central nervous system. The clinic is part of a larger neurological rehabilitation facility that pays particular attention to child rehabilitation alongside geriatric care.

The clinic will be equipped with modernized facilities and specialized treatment areas. Thirty-four children's beds in three sizes and five monitoring devices have been acquired, along with ten patient rooms and other doctor's offices and examination rooms that have been modernized. The newly designed children's emergency room will have exclusive treatment and waiting areas tailored to the needs of children and their families.

In acute emergency cases, the emergency room will be available around the clock as a central point of contact for treating infections of the airways and abdomen, fever seizures, and convulsions. The clinic will also offer a dedicated team of pediatric specialists, assistant physicians, nursing professionals, and medical assistants.

Looking ahead to the coming year, additional specialized offers are planned, including pediatric cardiology, diabetes care, obesity therapy programs, and pediatric sports medicine. Neonatology and pediatric intensive care will follow, supported by a gradual expansion of bed capacity and a planned new building, for which funding has already been applied for.

The clinic will provide care for surgically treated minors from cooperating specialties such as trauma surgery, orthopedics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). The lake in the clinic park has been secured with a 90-meter-long fence to protect the young patients.

Until then, Dr. med. Mirco Kuhnigk will lead the Children's Clinic Marl. He is currently the chief physician of pediatrics at the Marienhospital Bottrop. The clinic will offer family-oriented care, allowing parents to accompany their children throughout their stay and spend nights in the clinic. Play equipment for the children's playground, as well as games, children's books, and art supplies for the waiting areas have been provided.

In addition, the clinic plans to have specialized offers such as a neuropediatrics department focusing on neurological disorders in children, rehabilitation for children with congenital central nervous system disorders, social education programs supporting rehabilitation, and recreational and therapeutic environments including park areas and swimming pools to aid in recovery.

This suggests a comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation approach that integrates medical treatment with social and therapeutic support, designed to assist children in recovery post-critical care and with neurological conditions. Further specific pediatric subspecialties or planned expansions are not detailed in the available information.
