UK Nurse Rowena Rowberry Climbs Mount Everest, Continues Seven Summits Mission

Rowena Rowberry, a UK-trained nurse and advanced clinical practitioner, has reached the summit of Mount Everest, marking the fourth peak in her quest to complete the Seven Summits. This monumental achievement comes as Rowena aims to support the nursing profession, which she believes has been severely tested during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rowena embarked on her Seven Summits mission in 2024, starting without any mountain climbing experience or elite athlete status. Despite the challenges, she has scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Aconcagua, and Everest. Her journey is not just about peak bagging, but also to highlight the compassion and resilience of nurses, midwives, and healthcare assistants.

Climbing Everest was not just about personal endurance for Rowena. She dedicated her climb to giving back to the nursing profession that has shaped her life, having worked on the NHS frontline during the pandemic. Rowena's Everest climb was fraught with obstacles, including severe dehydration and food poisoning, but she pushed through to reach the top.

Hydration was a constant challenge during her climb, with frozen bottles, hard-to-access gear, and the trade-off between drinking and pushing on. Rowena's clinical background influenced her decision-making on the mountain, particularly in managing her hydration and medication. She experienced side effects on her first climb and now carries Diamox for emergencies.

Rowena resisted aspirin-based pain relief during her Everest climb due to potential kidney strain. Altitude sickness, a common obstacle for climbers, has so far spared Rowena, but she is aware it can strike without warning. Despite these challenges, Rowena's determination remains unwavering as she prepares for her next climbs to complete the Seven Summits.

If Rowena completes her goal, she could become the first female nurse in the UK to achieve this feat. She has set a £1,500 fundraising goal in honour of the RCN Foundation's 15th anniversary. Donation links to Rowena's RCN Foundation fundraiser are available on JustGiving, GoFundMe, and Instagram.

The RCN Foundation provides financial assistance, professional development opportunities, and grants for nurse-led projects. Rowena's journey is not just about personal achievement, but also about supporting healthcare professionals and raising awareness for the challenges they face.

Rowena's Seven Summits journey will be followed and updates shared as she continues her mission. With four summits already achieved, Rowena is planning her next climbs to conquer Carstensz Pyramid (Indonesia), Denali (North America), and Mount Vinson (Antarctica). The world eagerly awaits to see if Rowena will become the first female nurse in the UK to complete the Seven Summits.
