NFL match ends prematurely due to grave injury suffered by Detroit Lions' Morice Norris during preseason play.

Detroit Lions Safety Morice Norris Undergoes Concussion Protocol After Preseason Injury

Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris is currently in the concussion protocol following a serious head injury sustained during a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons on August 8, 2025.

The injury occurred during the second half of the game, when Norris hit Atlanta Falcons running back Nathan Carter with his facemask facing Carter's midsection. This caused Carter's head to snap back after the tackle, leading to Norris' injury.

Norris was taken off the field in an ambulance and was later reported to be in stable condition. He spent Friday night in an Atlanta hospital but was discharged and returned to Detroit the following day.

Coach Dan Campbell reported that Norris is doing well and emphasized a cautious approach to his recovery, planning to take "it nice and easy" over the next 10 to 14 days before reevaluating his status. Norris himself posted on social media that he was okay and thanked supporters. He has already returned to the Lions' team facility, indicating positive progress, though he remains under concussion protocol.

The NFL did not provide any information about the outcome of the game after the suspension. The game was suspended with 6:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, with the Lions leading the Falcons 17-10.

This is not the first instance of preseason games being affected by injuries. In Week 2 of the 2023 preseason, New England's game at Green Bay was called off when Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden was injured. A week later, a game between Miami and Jacksonville was not completed after Dolphins receiver Daewood Davis was injured.

Norris, a former Fresno State standout, played in eight games last season after earning a spot on the team as an undrafted rookie. His return to play will depend on how he responds to the concussion protocol in the coming weeks.

Players understand the risk and injury risk associated with football, according to Josh Allen. NFL preseason games ended early in consecutive weeks two years ago. Nonetheless, the focus remains on the health and safety of the players, as evidenced by the immediate attention given to Norris' injury and the subsequent suspension of the game.
