Neckart air filter columns are under disassembly
In a significant milestone, the air filter columns at Stuttgart's Neckartor, installed as part of a joint pilot project, are being dismantled. This development marks the success of a project aimed at reducing air pollution in the city.
The project, a comprehensive package of environmentally friendly transportation, traffic restrictions, and filter systems, has been coordinated by the city of Stuttgart. The state of Baden-Württemberg and project partner MANN+HUMMEL consider this initiative a success.
Hanno Höhn, CEO of MANN+HUMMEL Germany GmbH, is proud of the company's contribution to cleaner air in Stuttgart with their filtration solutions. The Europe-wide binding NO limit values of 40 micrograms per cubic meter of air (μg/m³) have been met at Neckartor since 2020, a testament to the effectiveness of the filter systems.
The installation of the air filter columns began in December 2018, with the operation of the 23 columns costing the state over two million euros. The operation of the columns was permanently costly due to significant power requirements. However, the dismantling of the columns relieves the household budgets, and their effect was always limited to the short street section.
The air filter columns were a necessary follow-up measure because nitrogen dioxide limit values were not being met despite extensive air purification measures at Neckartor. Since the commissioning of the filter columns at the end of 2018, concentrations of fine dust PM and nitrogen dioxide (NO) at Neckartor have decreased.
A scientific accompanying study confirmed an average reduction performance of the Filter Cubes of fine dust PM and nitrogen dioxide (NO) by around nine to ten percent in the area of the sidewalk and even above near the buildings.
Winfried Hermann, Transport Minister of Baden-Württemberg, stated that the project's success means that filtered outdoor air should only be a historical exception. Minister Hermann emphasized that we cannot let up given the significantly more stringent limits from 2030 onwards, as per the new European Air Quality Directive.
The focus remains on clean, sustainable mobility and the health of people in Stuttgart and all of Baden-Württemberg. Many other existing measures of the Stuttgart Air Cleaning Plan, such as the strong expansion of the environmental network and traffic bans for older diesel vehicles, continue to reduce air pollution in the whole city and thus protect the health of the entire population.
For further information, please contact the Ministry of Transport's Press Office or Citizen's Representative. The dismantling of the air filter columns is part of extensive construction measures on the federal road 14/Cannstatter Straße.
As we bid farewell to the air filter columns at Neckartor, we look forward to a future where cleaner air becomes the norm, not the exception, in Stuttgart and beyond.
