Men and women should have equal participation in military and national defense roles

In contemporary society, the exclusion of women from active military service is increasingly being viewed as outdated. This shift in perspective is driven by a growing emphasis on equality, capability, and professionalism, rather than traditional gender roles.

Critics argue that barring women from active service limits the pool of talent and unfairly restricts women's opportunities and contributions in national defense. They contend that physical standards and performance, rather than gender alone, should determine eligibility for active service.

Since the late 20th century, many armed forces have integrated women into combat and other active roles, recognising the importance of capitalising on women's proven abilities in diverse military functions. In the United States, for instance, women in the Army have been permitted in or near combat situations since 1994. Today, numerous countries allow women to serve in front-line units.

One notable advocate for this change is former Supreme Court Chief Justice Rait Maruste. His stance challenges outdated thinking patterns regarding the exclusion of women from active service. His belief in the need to change this exclusion underscores the importance of acknowledging women's abilities and removing institutional discrimination.

The Estonian Constitution ensures equality of citizens before the law. Involving women in national defense could potentially increase its effectiveness by broadening recruitment and reflecting equal citizenship rights. Moreover, debates about including women in conscription systems reflect shifting perspectives on equal responsibility for national defense.

Removing restrictions on women's participation in active military service enhances military effectiveness, ensuring that the best and brightest, regardless of gender, are able to serve their country. This approach not only reflects contemporary views on gender equality but also fosters a more inclusive and capable military force, ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Women's talents and capabilities in areas like science and health-and-wellness could significantly contribute to the advancement of national defense research, as restrictions on women's participation in active military service are gradually lifted. The promotion of women's health, particularly in women's health-related research, could lead to a more comprehensive understanding of the physical demands placed on military personnel and the development of better protective measures.
