Addressing Healthcare Shortage in Saxony-Anhalt:

The east German state of Saxony-Anhalt is grappling with a shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in certain regions. One approach to alleviate this issue is a subsidy, introduced a year ago, for medical professionals setting up or maintaining practices in regions with shortages. The Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV) Saxony-Anhalt reports initial success, with several supply shortages mitigated.

By April 30, 2025, approximately 950,000 euros or around 38% of the total fund amount has been disbursed. An additional 290,000 euros has been approved for additional practice openings. Improved supply is anticipated in areas such as the Altmark and the Börde region, with noticeable improvements expected in eye care, pediatric care, and various areas of primary care.

Recipients of the subsidy include two ophthalmologists in the Stendal district, 24 general practitioners in regions like Bernburg, Köthen, and Zerbst, and two pediatricians in the Börde district, among others. A total of 45 funding applications have been submitted, of which 29 have been approved, while the remaining applications were withdrawn by the applicants.

The state committee of physicians and health insurance companies in Saxony-Anhalt is responsible for the funding, with a total of 2.52 million euros available until June 30, 2026. Both the KV Saxony-Anhalt and health insurance companies contribute equally. General practitioners, ophthalmologists, ear, nose, and throat specialists, pediatricians, neurologists, and child and adolescent psychiatrists may benefit.

The KV predicts that around 520 positions in Saxony-Anhalt could remain unfilled in five years, more than double the current number. This is mainly due to about a third of medical professionals retiring by 2030, totaling nearly 1,180 doctors. On the flip side, around 870 new medical professionals are expected to enter the workforce. The rising trend among young doctors towards part-time work and a preference for full-time employment without taking on their own practice poses additional challenges for the healthcare system.

The German healthcare system is facing increasing challenges as not enough doctors are joining to maintain the current level of care, according to the KV. Various initiatives, such as policy changes, workforce adjustments, and digital healthcare integration, are being explored to address these challenges. Regional considerations, such as competitive compensation packages and community engagement, may also play a significant role in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals.

  1. To address the increasing challenges in the healthcare system and potential staff shortages, the KV in Saxony-Anhalt is considering implementing community engagement policies, which could involve vocational training programs for individuals interested in medical fields.
  2. As part of the health-and-wellness, science, and finance initiatives, the KV and health insurance companies in Saxony-Anhalt could collaborate on vocational training programs that specialize in medical-conditions, focusing on fields with current shortages like ophthalmology, pediatrics, and primary care.
