Manitoba's New Victoria Hospital Emergency Department Breaks Ground in 2026
The Manitoba government has announced that construction on a new emergency department at Victoria Hospital is set to begin next year. This project, a campaign promise made by Premier Wab Kinew's NDP government, is now at its next phase for South Winnipeg residents.
Premier Wab Kinew stated that the timing had to be right before work began on the new Victoria emergency department. The province needed to address health-care staffing issues before any building upgrades. Now, with 3,400 new health-care workers hired, the project can safely proceed.
The tender for the emergency department is set to be awarded next month. Construction is slated to begin in the new year, with activity on-site starting in January 2026 and shovels in the ground for the new emergency room construction in March of the same year. The new emergency department will replace the current urgent care centre.
The Victoria Hospital will also be the site of the Mature Women's Centre and the Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre, both scheduled to open alongside the new emergency department. This news comes a day after the provincial government and Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) announced the opening of the first phase of upgrades to the emergency department at St. Boniface Hospital.
The Manitoba government's commitment to improving health care in South Winnipeg is evident with the upcoming construction of the new emergency department at Victoria Hospital. The project, set to begin next year, will not only provide better emergency care but also house the Mature Women's Centre and the Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre. This development follows the government's hiring of 3,400 new health-care workers, ensuring the province is well-prepared for the construction and operation of the new facility.
