Tragedy Strikes Controversial Swiss Suicide Organization: President Commits Suicide After Traumatic Ordeal
Leader of a suicide advocacy group takes own life
In a shocking turn of events, Florian Willet, the president of the Swiss euthanasia organization The Last Resort, took his own life. The organization announced this sad news, which was later confirmed by the Schaffhausen Public Prosecutor's Office.
Willet, a 47-year-old German resident of Switzerland, had been under investigation for "incitement and assistance in suicide," stemming from his involvement in the first death using the new Sarco device in a forest near Schaffhausen in September. Subsequently, he was arrested and detained.
According to the organization's website, Willet ended his life in Germany on May 5. He was reportedly devastated by the accusations and the traumatic experience of detention. After approximately 70 days behind bars, he was released in December. The prosecutor's office revealed that the investigations against other suspects continue.
Switzerland permits suicide assistance as long as it is free of self-interest. The authorities view the Sarco device as non-compliant with the law. This capsule allows a person to lie down and suffocate after pressing a button that introduces nitrogen.
Before the first use of the Sarco device, the authorities had warned the creators. The initial user was a 64-year-old American woman. The Institute of Forensic Medicine of the Canton of Zurich has released an autopsy report, but the prosecutor's office has yet to divulge any information regarding the ongoing investigations.
