Taraba State Braces for Labour Strike Over Biometric Data Disputes
Taraba State is gearing up for a labour strike, as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a statewide action starting on August 11, 2025. The strike is in response to ongoing irregularities tied to the state's Biometric Data Capture Committee.
The unions have accused the committee of engaging in practices such as unauthorized deductions and discrepancies in wage administration. These allegations, if true, have caused significant concern among workers, leading to the strike notice. Despite issuing an ultimatum to the state government, there has been no concrete response or action to rectify the issues, prompting the latest escalation.
The strike call in Taraba on August 6, 2025, was made by the leadership of the NLC and TUC, specifically their regional leaders in Taraba State. The decision for the strike was made at a Joint State Administrative Council meeting held on August 6.
The strike is aimed at pushing back against alleged illegal activities by the Biometric Data Capture Committee and the state government's inaction in addressing earlier concerns raised by labour. The unions have indicated their willingness to engage but say any negotiation must begin with a clear commitment by the government to address the biometric-related grievances in good faith.
Strike implementation committees are to be set up within the respective ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) by affiliates of the NLC and TUC, and civil society organizations within the state. All workers, civil society organizations, and the masses are urged to stock their houses for all necessary provisions in preparation for the strike.
Observers say there is still a narrow window for dialogue that could avert a complete shutdown of public services in Taraba. Despite the state government yet to release an official response to the strike notice, the unions have directed their affiliates to commence immediate mobilisation ahead of the strike.
