Kindergruppe Kiko's 'Winter Exercises 2023' Teaches Vital Survival Skills
The Kindergruppe Kiko has organised 'Winter Exercises 2023' at the Regenbogenschule Steinfurt, focusing on essential winter survival skills. Participants will learn how to locate safe water sources, build wind-resistant structures, start fires using natural materials, and create snow shelters.
The event will cover crucial aspects of winter survival. Attendees will learn to identify safe water sources under ice, avoiding those near roads contaminated by salt runoff. They will also test ice thickness with a stick before approaching any frozen water source.
Participants will be taught how to create a wind-resistant structure by building thick walls that block wind but allow body heat to warm the interior. Starting a fire using natural materials in snowy conditions will also be demonstrated, with a focus on fire safety techniques around snow.
Melted snow will be used for drinking water, with instructions on collecting fresh, white snow from clean surfaces away from roads or animal tracks. The importance of melting small amounts slowly and bringing melted snow to a rolling boil for at least one minute to kill harmful bacteria will be emphasized.
Building a snow shelter to provide crucial protection from wind and help trap body heat to prevent hypothermia will be another key skill taught. Participants will learn how to gather insulation materials from nature and identify the best location for a snow shelter, considering natural windbreaks, existing snow depth, and avoiding low-lying areas and potential flood zones.
The importance of keeping extremities protected from cold will be highlighted, with advice on wearing insulated gloves, waterproof boots, and covering exposed facial skin. Regularly wiggling fingers and toes will be encouraged to maintain blood circulation and prevent dangerous cold injuries.
Recognizing signs of hypothermia and frostbite will also be covered, with attendees learning to spot symptoms such as uncontrollable shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and extreme fatigue for hypothermia, and red, cold skin that becomes numb and may tingle or sting painfully for frostbite.
The 'Winter Exercises 2023' organised by the Kindergruppe Kiko aims to equip participants with vital winter survival skills. By learning how to locate safe water sources, build shelters, start fires, and recognize and treat cold-related injuries, attendees will be better prepared to face the challenges of winter.
