Kenichi Pacific Restaurant in Kailua-Kona Reopens After Food Safety Violations
The Kenichi Pacific restaurant in Kailua-Kona, operated by Dragonfly Hospitality Group, was temporarily closed last week by the Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) due to multiple critical food safety violations.
The violations included numerous live and dead cockroaches observed on food-contact surfaces and in storage areas of the kitchen. Additionally, food-contact equipment and surfaces were unclean, and the physical facilities were not properly maintained or cleaned.
To reopen, Kenichi Pacific had to take several corrective actions. They discarded all contaminated food products, hired a professional pest control operator, and submitted the service report to the DOH. The restaurant thoroughly cleaned and disinfected all food- and non-food contact surfaces, removed unnecessary equipment and supplies to prevent pest harborage, and conducted maintenance and repair of the mechanical dishwasher and refrigerators.
Following these steps, the restaurant passed the follow-up inspection on August 4, 2025, and was issued a green "pass" placard. The restaurant was authorized for reopening on August 6, 2025.
The DOH conducted the follow-up inspection on Tuesday, August 4, and determined that all requirements set by them had been met by Kenichi Pacific. The restaurant was reopened after addressing all the food safety issues that were initially found.
