Kate Gosselin openly confesses to relying on harmful strategies to cope following her children's departure for college
Kate Gosselin, the former reality television star known for her show "Jon & Kate Plus 8," is getting real about her experiences with empty nest syndrome. Her life looks a lot different now, with her oldest children, twins Mady and Cara, recently going off to college.
In the initial weeks after her daughters left, Kate admitted she struggled to accept the fact that they were gone. She pretended they were still at home, claiming they were just upstairs sleeping, and frequently cried on FaceTime with them. This emotional behavior reflected her struggle with empty nest syndrome, a common feeling experienced by parents when their children leave home for the first time.
Over time, Kate started to accept the new reality, especially as her younger children went away to colleges closer to home, allowing for weekend visits which felt less final. She shared her feelings in a recent TikTok video, revealing that in the first weeks her daughters were away, the three of them would sit and cry on FaceTime together.
However, Kate's life has not been without controversy. In 2018, Jon was temporarily awarded custody of another sextuplet, Collin, after allegations of a behavioral disorder and being sent to a separate school. Collin later accused his mother of being "physically aggressive and verbally very abusive" in an interview with The Sun in 2024. Kate's lawyer, Richard Puelo, stated that she has no comment on the situation because it gets taken out of context and does not believe she intentionally harmed any of her children.
Despite these challenges, Kate continues to work as a pediatric nurse, often working 12-hour shifts. Her favorite time is around the holidays, when all her kids are home and her home is loud. Kate's life may have changed significantly since her reality television days, but her love for her children remains strong.
