In the heart of Gütersloh, the Women's Place NRW was recently unveiled, a project initiated by the Women's Council NRW. The opening ceremony was a poignant event, filled with music, personal memories, and historical retrospectives, all in honour of Sabine Gramlich, a woman whose commitment to peace, justice, and women's voices in societal debates has left an indelible mark on the city.

Sabine Gramlich, who has resided in Gütersloh since 1955, was the driving force behind this significant project. She opened the Women's Place NRW, a testament to her lifelong dedication to women's rights and social justice.

Gramlich, a former teacher, was not a passive observer in her activities. She was involved in various organisations, including the Refugee Council, church women's groups, the psychiatry department of the LWL clinic, Amnesty International, and the peace movement. Her activism was evident in her participation in over seventy street blockades, even at the age of seventy.

The opening of the Women's Place NRW became particularly emotional when Gramlich's sons, Peter and Rainer, shared their memories of her. They thanked the many people who supported their mother during her activities. City archivist Julia Kuklik noted that Gramlich organised rallies, vigils, and demonstrations, her actions echoing through the city's history.

Inge Trame, city archivist Julia Kuklik, and Eckhard Müller from the Street Names Working Group submitted the application for the Women's Place NRW in Gütersloh. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia funded the project, which aims to make the lives of historically significant women visible and inspire women and girls.

The music for the opening of the FrauenOrt NRW in Gütersloh was provided by Dagmar C. Weinert. She offered musical moments, including interpreting peace-themed songs, adding a melodious dimension to the emotional event. The memorial plaque for Sabine Gramlich, kept in the cityscape and memory, serves as a reminder of her enduring legacy.

Gramlich herself summarised her stance as, 'History challenged me to take responsibility, and this is never ending.' Her commitment to peace, justice, and women's voices continues to inspire and encourage others, ensuring her legacy lives on in Gütersloh and beyond.
