Aid Arrives: From Gaza to the Mercy of Italy

Italian Medical Professionals to Perform Cure on Adam from Chan Junis

By Andrea Affaticati, Milan

The clock strikes midnight as a C-130 of the Italian Air Force lands at Milan's Linate Airport, carrying a heart-wrenching load. Inside, passengers in need of urgent medical care - some stretcher-bound, others walking cautiously with bandaged limbs - have journeyed from the Gaza Strip. Among them, the 11-year-old Adam, whose life was forever changed by a tragic bombing attack that took the lives of his nine siblings.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a devastating offensive in the Gaza Strip on May 23rd. The al-Najjar family faced an unimaginable tragedy, with Adam being the sole survivor of a family that once numbered ten.

Alaa al-Najjar, Adam's mother, was on duty at the Nasser Hospital at the time of the attack, fortunately sparing her from the horrors that unfolded at their home in Khan Yunis. Carrying the memories of her severely burnt children, she now stands on Italian soil, a testament to the aid that this war-weary nation continues to offer.

A Beacon of Hope

Italy's reputation as a haven for those fleeing the horrors of conflict has been earned through its tireless efforts to provide medical evacuations to those in need. As the fourth- largest organizer of such missions, Italy has brought over 150 patients from Gaza to its hospitals since the early days of the conflict[1].

On this particular day, three flights landed in succession, carrying 17 severely injured patients and 53 family members. The intensive diplomatic efforts of the Italian embassy in Tel Aviv, the general consulate in Jerusalem, and other government officials ensured the smooth execution of these medical missions[2].

Foreign Minister Tajani, along with a ball as a gift, greeted the evacuees upon their arrival, expressing Italy's unwavering commitment to providing aid to those in need, no matter where they may come from[3].

A New Chapter in Milan

Adam, now the face of the Operation Gaza Evacuation, was taken to the Niguarda hospital in Milan. The specialized burn center at this hospital has a history of treating children from war-torn regions, offering not only medical care but also emotional support[4].

Prior to his evacuation, Adam's mother, Alaa, spoke with the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica." She described her son's condition as stable but still critical, with his left arm bearing severe damage[4]. Adam himself shared his experience with the Turkish news agency Anadolu, expressing the ongoing pain he felt in his left hand, which lacked feeling in his fingers[4].

Alaa expressed her deep gratitude to Italy and the Italians, not only for allowing her son to escape the constant threat of war but also for providing the necessary medical care. Before setting foot on Italian soil, she voiced her empathy for those left behind in Gaza, but the welfare of her son is now her top priority[4].
