A construction site in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, halted operations following a tragic accident that claimed the life of one worker and injured five others at the Cebu Light Industrial Park (Clip) on April 26, 2025. The mishap occurred due to unset cement on the second level of a building under construction.

Authorities launched an investigation into the structural integrity of the building and its compliance with safety regulations. The construction site remains shut down indefinitely, as a precautionary measure, until further instructions from the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) 7 and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza).

Mactan Economic Zone Administrator Emmanuel Cortero shared his thoughts with our website Cebu on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Vertical construction activities at the site have also been put on hold. Cortero learned about the incident on Monday, April 28, and promptly instructed the engineering department to carry out an investigation.

Initial findings revealed that the worker died upon impact after falling from a canopy that stood at a height of three meters above the first level. The building owner, contractor, and Dole 7 are in close coordination regarding the incident.

Cortero emphasized that the welfare of workers and business entities within the economic zone is their top priority, as both Peza and Dole share the same responsibility in ensuring occupational safety. He described the incident as an isolated case, mentioning that it was the first of its kind within the private eco-zones.

The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) 7 confirmed multiple investigations in response to the incident. Their incident investigators have submitted their findings for review by their superiors. Following the internal review, the report will be forwarded to Dole 7 Director Roy Buenafe for appropriate action.

While Peza issues permits for structures in the economic zone, it appears that the engineering department has yet to disclose detailed findings regarding the building's structural integrity and related incident factors. The building owner has committed to covering the necessary expenses for the affected families.
