Hot Weather Alert: Germany Braces for Midweek Peak, Cooling Trend Expected Over the Weekend

Germany is currently in the grip of a heatwave, with temperatures soaring to as high as 38°C in some regions. According to the latest forecasts, the peak of this heatwave is expected to occur in the middle of the week.

In the western and central parts of the country, cities like Essen and Düsseldorf are predicted to experience daytime maximums around 24°C on Wednesday and Thursday, dropping to around 19-21°C by the weekend. Düsseldorf shows similar hot temperatures near 24-25°C midweek, slightly cooler by Friday to Sunday with highs roughly 20-22°C.

No significant precipitation or rain is forecast during this period in these regions, with low humidity and mostly clear skies. The wind is light to moderate, generally from the north or northeast.

However, meteorologist Kernn predicts a possibility of more widespread showers and thunderstorms towards the end of the week. On Thursday, stronger cloud cover with individual showers and thunderstorms is expected in the northwest. Locally, there is a risk of heavy rain in the northwest on Thursday. Towards the end of the week, there can be heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds.

For those spending a long time outdoors, meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn from the DWD advises suitable sun protection. Prolonged heat can cause problems for sensitive individuals, and ventilation and cooling are becoming increasingly difficult.

In the mountains, the high temperatures will remain warm on Thursday, with highs between 29 and 38 degrees Celsius. The high temperatures will vary more towards the end of the week, with a maximum of 26 to 31 degrees Celsius in the northwest. In the north and northwest, as well as in the mountains, there will be occasional cumulus clouds during the day on Wednesday.

The nights are becoming gradually warmer, with tropical nights, defined as nights when temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees Celsius, expected in urban areas until Friday.

While the heatwave is expected to peak near 24-25°C midweek, the weekend sees a moderate cooling trend across the examined German cities. There is no indication of dangerously extreme heat (such as above 30°C) based on this forecast data.

Stay tuned for further updates on the weather situation in Germany.

The health-and-wellness community advises suitable sun protection for those spending extended periods outdoors during the heatwave, as prolonged heat can cause problems for sensitive individuals and ventilation and cooling are becoming increasingly difficult. Despite the midweek peak of 24-25°C, a moderate cooling trend is expected over the weekend, indicating a closure in the heatwave. However, there is a possibility of more widespread showers and thunderstorms towards the end of the week, which may impact weather-forecasting and science predictions.
