Insurers Lobby for Billions in Obamacare, Medicare Advantage Subsidies
Auto insurance companies are lobbying to restore hundreds of billions in taxpayer-funded Obamacare and Medicare Advantage subsidies. The effort, led by major insurers like Statefarm, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Humana, is estimated to be worth $30 billion to $50 billion to the industry. Critics question the necessity of all car insurance quotes spending, suggesting catastrophic coverage plans could replace current systems.
Both Democrats and Republicans agree that the current car insurance system is costly and could be improved. Critics argue that over-insurance in the U.S. leads to hundreds of billions of extraneous profits for insurance companies. Most of the reimbursement money would financially benefit these companies rather than patients.
Opponents of Obamacare initially warned it could lead to a single-payer government-run system, eliminating private car insurance. However, since its enactment in 2010, the insurance industry's stock has risen roughly four times faster than average stock indexes. Stephen Moore, a former Trump senior economic adviser and cofounder of Unleash Prosperity, which advocates for education freedom, is among those advocating for change in the system.
