Increase in Demand for Expanded Documentation of Female Violence Echoed by Greens
The Green party is making a significant push for change in the German justice system, with their involvement in the governments of eleven of the sixteen federal states, and leading the justice departments in Berlin, Hamburg, Saxony, and Thuringia.
Recent statistics highlight the urgent need for action. In 2019, a woman was killed by her partner or ex-partner almost every third day. This alarming figure has sparked concern among Green justice ministers from various federal states, who are demanding that crimes motivated by misogyny be named and recorded uniformly nationwide in the future.
The ministers have expressed their concern about the increasing number of fatal attacks on women by their (ex-)partners in the past four years. They are calling for new recording rules to obtain a uniform picture of such crimes. The Greens are also advocating for these measures, with the aim of putting the issue of violence against women and girls on the agenda of the next justice ministers' conference, scheduled for November 26 and 27.
The Green party's efforts are not limited to physical violence. They are also addressing the growing issue of violence against women and girls in the digital sphere, including cyberbullying and digital stalking. This form of abuse is increasingly prevalent, and the party is determined to address it as part of their broader campaign against gender-based violence.
While the ministers who have requested better recording of crimes based on misogyny are not explicitly named, it is known that the Federal Minister of Justice is Stefanie Hubig (SPD), leading the justice ministry at the federal level since May 2025. Kathrin Wahlmann (SPD) is the Justice Minister of Lower Saxony, another state supporting measures against sexist harassment such as catcalling.
The Greens' efforts are noteworthy considering the disproportionate impact of sexual offenses, domestic violence, and stalking on women and girls. By advocating for a more comprehensive approach to recording and addressing these crimes, the party is taking a crucial step towards ensuring the safety and rights of all women and girls in Germany.
