'In Charente, a gîte designed for disabled individuals was consumed by flames, as reported by a neighbor who observed his spouse enter, but not exit'
In a devastating turn of events, a fire broke out at a holiday lodge (gîte) in Montmoreau, South Charente, France, on the morning of July 28, 2025. The incident resulted in the tragic loss of four lives, leaving a trail of shock and sorrow in its wake.
The lodge, certified to accommodate adults with disabilities during vacation periods, was hosting a group of individuals with mental disabilities. This facility was connected to the UFCV Limoges and served a similar purpose, much like the educational and therapeutic institution involved in the tragic fire in Wintzenheim, Haut-Rhin, in August 2023, which claimed the lives of 11 people, including adults with mild mental disabilities and their caregivers.
The fire occurred at around 4:30 AM on the night of Sunday to Monday. A vacation monitor alerted emergency services about the fire at the lodge where he was working. By the time the firefighters arrived, twenty minutes later, the old stone farmhouse was already engulfed. The location, Chez Gros Jean, is an isolated hamlet with only a few houses visible from the road.
Four people, aged between 20 and 75, from the regions of Haute-Vienne and Jura, were declared dead. Among the dead were the owner, a woman in her sixties, and three residents. Four others were also injured. Three other staff members were sleeping in the burning lodge.
The investigation, led by the Angoulême prosecutor's office, aims to clarify the exact cause of the fire and ensure accountability. The criminal investigation unit is actively handling the case, with the possibility of involuntary homicide or injuries being considered.
In the wake of this traumatic event, authorities have set up psychological support for victims and their families. The lodge also housed two owners of the site and eight adults with mental disabilities. Approximately 300 square meters of the building were reduced to ashes.
