Implementation of Smoking Prohibition in Public Areas Across France

France to Impose Wide-Ranging Smoking Ban in Public Spaces from July

Thousands of lives are lost annually in France due to tobacco-related illnesses. The Paris administration is set to intensify its efforts to shield non-smokers from harmful smoke. Effective July 1, 2025, smoking will be outlawed in numerous public areas where children are likely to be present.

In an interview with "Ouest-France" on Thursday, Health Minister Catherine Vautrin revealed the ban's intent to safeguard children, stating, "Tobacco must vanish from spaces where children are present." Vautrin reiterated, " one's freedom to smoke ends where the right to clean air for children starts."

From next summer, smoking will be banned in outdoor areas such as parks, beaches, sports facilities, bus stops, and areas around schools. Transgressing the ban could incur a fine of up to €135. Smoking in the outdoor sections of restaurants is still permitted, and the restriction does not apply to e-cigarettes, although the Minister plans to limit the amount of nicotine and authorized flavors in these devices, as per the interview.

France and its efforts to combat tobacco use have been ongoing. With 75,000 deaths annually attributed to tobacco, and nearly a quarter of French adults smoking daily, according to the French Center for Drugs and Addiction, the extended smoking ban forms part of a comprehensive campaign to curb tobacco consumption. The country has already prohibited smoking in restaurants and clubs since 2008.

The extended smoking ban signifies a significant stride towards a smoke-free public environment, especially in areas frequented by children and teenagers. The move underscores the French government's determination to deter young people from picking up the harmful habit.
