HHS Plans for Shutdown: 79,717 Employees to Keep Essential Health Services Running

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced its plans for the federal government shutdown. Around 41% of its 15,000 employees will be furloughed, while a significant number will continue essential public health and safety activities.

HHS, which employs over 80,000 staff, will retain 79,717 employees during the shutdown. These include 15,000 workers who are required by law to continue their duties. This means crucial health programs will remain operational. However, many services may face halts or reduced efficiency due to staff furloughs. HHS has planned to furlough 32,460 employees, leaving a considerable workforce to maintain essential functions.

During the federal government shutdown, HHS will continue to prioritize public health and safety. While some services may be impacted, crucial health programs will remain operational thanks to the dedicated staff who are legally required to continue their duties.
