Heatstroke is a severe condition that requires immediate medical attention. It occurs when the body's temperature rises to 103 degrees or higher, leading to symptoms such as hot, red, or dry skin, disorientation, dizziness, rapid pulse and breathing, and fainting. Young children and older adults are particularly susceptible to high heat and should take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids.
The main causes for heatstroke are prolonged exposure to high temperatures, dehydration, and impaired heat regulation by the body. This often happens due to strenuous physical activity or inadequate cooling mechanisms. Heatstroke is life-threatening and can lead to brain damage or death if left untreated.
Heat cramps are the first sign of overheating and can be treated by stopping activity, stretching, drinking water or electrolyte drinks, and avoiding caffeine or alcohol. However, it's important to note that heatstroke symptoms can be difficult to distinguish from heat exhaustion. If unsure, it's safer to seek medical attention.
Heat exhaustion is more severe than heat cramps and requires immediate cooling and hydration. If symptoms do not improve, medical attention is necessary. To prevent heat illness, drink fluids every 15 minutes during exercise, adjust workout intensity and duration, try different activities, and exercise in the morning or evening when it's cooler.
