Health Minister announced as the new leader of the Women's Organization
Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken Elected as New CDU Women's Union Chairwoman
Reutlingen - Nina Warken, the Federal Minister of Health, has been elected as the new chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Women's Union. Warken, 46, defeated Ina Scharrenbach, North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister for Home Affairs, Municipalities, Construction, and Digitalization, in a tightly contested race at the Women's Union's federal delegates' conference in Reutlingen. Warken secured 62.1 percent of the vote, while Scharrenbach garnered 37.4 percent.
In her inaugural speech, Warken advocated for increased female representation in politics. However, her potential to retain her position as state general secretary in Baden-Württemberg remains uncertain. Traditionally, a general secretary is the top campaign manager. It is challenging to envision Warken coordinating the 2026 state election campaign in Baden-Württemberg while concurrently serving as federal health minister.
Criticism has been levied against the CDU regarding the scarcity of women in leadership positions. Prior to the election, both outgoing chairwoman Annette Widmann-Mauz and Karin Prien, the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, criticized the lack of gender parity in the CDU. For instance, in the coalition committee, a second central decision-making body, only ten men and one woman are present. The CDU Women's Union under Widmann-Mauz has reoriented its communication strategy and increased its social media presence. It has substantially contributed to initiatives addressing violence against women.
The new Bundestag and Chancellor Friedrich Merz's cabinet currently have an uneven gender balance, with ten men and eight women in the cabinet. However, the most important ministries and the coalition committee consist predominantly of male leaders.
The CDU Women's Union boasts approximately 95,000 members, and the chairwoman automatically assumes a seat on the CDU's federal executive board.
Gender Balance in Leadership Positions
Recent political developments offer some insight into the gender balance within the CDU's leadership structures. For example, in the broader coalition government, the SPD has disclosed a majority-female ministerial team. However, specific details regarding the gender balance within the CDU's contribution to the federal cabinet are not fully available. Criticism has been directed at the CDU's stance on gender issues, which might impact perceptions of its leadership's gender balance.
