Government conceals malfunctions in abusers' bracelets, claims PP, while Redondo downplays the repercussions
In a recent development, the People's Party (PP) has launched a campaign to hold the Government accountable for an alleged error in the telemetric bracelets designed to monitor abusers. The controversy centres around the 2024 data download of these bracelets, with the PP accusing the Government of hiding the fact.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the PP, has been vocal in his criticism, stating that warnings were ignored and the effects of negligence were hidden for months. He emphasised that the error in the bracelets is a lamentable, grave fact, and governing from total incompetence puts women in danger. Feijóo accused the executive of being "so absorbed in defending itself that it no longer defends those who need it most."
However, Ana Redondo, the Minister of Equality, maintains that the error had a "minimum impact" and has already been corrected. She insists that the telemetric bracelets have been working at all times and continue to work, providing safety and saving lives daily. Redondo maintained that the error in the telemetric bracelets did not imply the release of any abuser, and no woman with a bracelet has been killed.
The exact number of men affected by the malfunction of telemetry control bracelets and left without telemetry monitoring was 600. Felix Bolanos, Minister of Justice, stated that the devices continued sending messages to women with restraining orders against their aggressors.
Sources from the PP claimed that Jaime De los Santos, Vice-Secretary of Education and Equality of the party, called Redondo to ask for the number of women left unprotected by the error, but Redondo could not specify the number. In response, the PP has registered a battery of questions for Redondo to appear and give explanations in the hemicycle.
The PP plans to force a vote in the next plenary session of the Congress to censure Redondo for negligence. However, María Jesús Montero, Vice-President, found it curious that the PP is raising this issue when they are voting against laws that protect women. The Government is accusing the PP of hypocrisy for their actions.
Feijóo questioned the message being given to victims who see that they have been unprotected and nothing happens. He concluded that the Government has freed predators from courts and prisons due to errors in the telemetric bracelets and service provider. The controversy continues to unfold as both parties strive to defend their positions.
