Future responsibility of the Synagogue Museum Grobzig to be assumed by the local county - Future Museum Manager Holes Out for Synagogue Göbzig District
The Museum Synagogue Grobzig, a significant cultural and educational institution in Landkreis Anhalt-Bitterfeld, is set to embark on a new journey. The Landkreis Anhalt-Bitterfeld will take over as the carrier of the museum, starting next year, following the current carrier, the Museum Association.
This change, scheduled to take effect in 2025, is a result of a contract signed by the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Culture in Magdeburg. The aim is to ensure that the state can fulfill its contractual obligations to Jewish communities sustainably. The Grobziger Synagogue Association, a part of the new arrangement, will become a supporting association.
The Museum Synagogue Grobzig, an authentic former synagogue building, stands as a rare architectural and cultural relic. It houses a museum that serves to preserve the physical legacy of the Jewish community that once lived in the area, maintaining the building's structure and original features as a testament to local Jewish life, traditions, and religious practices.
Through exhibitions and guided tours, the museum educates visitors about Jewish history, religion, and cultural contributions in Anhalt-Bitterfeld and beyond. This includes information on daily life, religious customs, the impact of historical events like the Holocaust, and the fate of the local Jewish community. Its educational programs often aim to foster tolerance, understanding, and awareness about Jewish culture and history.
The museum organizes cultural events, lectures, workshops, and commemorative activities that engage the local community and visitors. These cultural programs often connect Jewish heritage to contemporary issues of diversity, human rights, and intercultural dialogue, making the museum a vibrant center for cultural exchange and learning.
By focusing on remembrance, the Museum Synagogue Grobzig contributes to the German broader landscape of Holocaust remembrance and Jewish heritage preservation. It helps maintain collective memory and acts as a site for reflection, dialogue, and reconciliation.
Culture Minister Rainer Robra (CDU) has praised the museum as a vibrant place of culture and history, a meeting place for people from Grobzig and the region. The museum is also an important partner in the educational work of numerous schools in Saxony-Anhalt. Over the past three years, the state has provided the museum with over 500,000 euros in institutional support.
Renovation work on the roof of the synagogue building is planned, reflecting the commitment to preserving this historical and cultural treasure. As the Museum Synagogue Grobzig prepares for its new chapter, it remains dedicated to its mission of preserving and presenting Jewish heritage, promoting education, and fostering cultural exchange.
- In its new chapter, the Museum Synagogue Grobzig will consider implementing vocational training programs, such as science and health-and-wellness fields, as part of its community policy, to ensure its continuous growth and relevance within the modern educational landscape.
- As part of its holistic approach to cultural preservation, the Museum Synagogue Grobzig plans to expand its educational offerings beyond just the history of Jewish communities, adding vocational training opportunities in fields like science and health-and-wellness, to empower and enrich its diverse audience.
