Fitness enthusiasts turn Ayi-Mensah into a vibrant gathering
Fitness Fad in Aburi Mountains: The ever-growing popularity of fitness routines amidst the buzz for health consciousness has escalated the formation of numerous fitness clubs nestled in the picturesque Aburi Mountains – a weekend haven for the eager exercisers.
But, the post-workout indulgence of these fitness enthusiasts and some individuals isn't quite what the doctor ordered. Some participants turn their workout sessions into feasting sprees, relishing grilled pork accompanied by Ghanaian local gin, famously known as 'akpeteshie.'
Oheneba Ntim Barima, the lead honcho at Soul Health and Wellness Centre, and a fervent promoter of fitness, illuminated the potential perils of overindulgence in meat or alcohol. According to him, such habits can wreak havoc on vital organs like the liver, kidneys, and more, transforming their weekend workout into a self-destructive pursuit akin to a leisurely slumber at home.
"They're practically negating the purpose of their workout sessions. Instead of perspiring and striving for a healthier self, it'd be easier for them to take a nice nap," laments Oheneba.
He reminisced about the bygone days when there was a palpable sense of urgency surrounding workout regimens. Back then, it wasn't uncommon to see establishments like grilled pork joints and drinking bars setting up camp away from the Aburi Mountains, only to spring up alongside the busy road.
Corporate entities like banks, insurance firms, NGOs, and private individuals are among the multitude participating in these weekend fitness escapades.
Oheneba expressed concern over the sharply increasing flow of meat and alcohol-related health issues he encounters daily at his health center. "Frankly speaking, I've seen an alarming surge in symptoms and diagnoses related to meat and alcohol consumption among young adults, aged between 18 to 35. The situation is grim and calls for immediate action," he warned.
Drawing from the insights of George D. Pamplona-Roger, a renowned Digestive Surgeon and Health Education Specialist at UNED University Spain, Oheneba emphasized that excess meat consumption can exacerbate the disease of gout – a condition characterized by high uric acid levels in the blood. He elaborated that regular meat intake is also linked to colon cancer.
He explained that eating meat, particularly pork, high in fat can significantly increase heart disease risks, especially the risk of myocardial infarction, or heart attack.
Regarding alcohol consumption, Oheneba underlined that the primary concern lies in dehydration, as alcohol acts as a diuretic – encouraging the body to release excess fluids. Post-workout, it's crucial to restore fluid levels promptly, but alcohol consumption can hinder this process due to its diuretic effects.
To sum it up, Oheneba advised the younger generation to prioritize their health by embracing healthy lifestyles and routines conducive to longevity. "Steer clear of unhealthy, youthful habits. Eat nutritious foods, drink plenty of clean water, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and you'll enjoy a long, healthy life," he suggested.
