Facing the Storm: Lady Bitch Ray Opens Up About Her Breast Cancer Journey
Female Hip-Hop Artist Lady Bitch Ray Battled Breast Cancer
In an unexpected turn of events, renowned rapper Lady Bitch Ray was hit with a breast cancer diagnosis last year. Sharing her story in a candid interview with 'Stern', she recounts the emotional rollercoaster that followed.
At the beginning of the year, the musician, whose real name is Reyhan Şahin, discovered a lump in her breast. Her gynecologist, she says, was immediately certain of the diagnosis. A week later, a biopsy confirmed her worst fears.
"Of course, it was a shock," she revealed. "I underwent breast-conserving surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. I was out for nine months," she explained.
Throughout her challenging journey, Şahin was grateful for the support from her family, friends, and fellow artists. "They visited me when I was feeling down due to the chemo side effects. They cooked for me when I could eat. I am fortunate to have such incredible people in my life," she beamed.
From Anger to Empowerment
Today, Şahin, a native of Bremen, is feeling strong and ready to face the future. When asked if her illness had made her stronger, she shared that she had battled severe depression twice before. "At first, I was angry because I thought, 'Destiny, you've let me down twice already.' But I've learned to cope with these crises," she said.
Şahin, who holds a doctorate in linguistics and has been researching racism as a research fellow at the Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg for several years, is now writing a book about her experiences with breast cancer. The book, scheduled for publication in the fall, aims to be informative, empowering, and sprinkled with doses of humor to keep things from getting too gloomy.
