Exploring Leisure Through the Lens of Yoga Philosophy

Living a life in harmony with yoga philosophy doesn't just mean mastering our minds and bodies, but also finding enjoyment in activities that aid our spiritual growth. In this guide, we'll explore the three 'gunas'—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas—that dictate our tendencies and leanings, and what kinds of leisure activities fall into each category.

The Three Gunas:

  • Sattva: Represents purity, light, and knowledge. For leisure, Sattva includes pursuits such as spiritual reading, meditation, nature walks, and engaging in creative activities like painting or writing poetry.
  • Rajas: Represents energy, action, and change. Healthy Rajasic leisure can encompass various sports, creative pursuits, and even travel, as long as these activities are executed with self-discipline and a spiritual intention.
  • Tamas: Represents inertia, dullness, and ignorance. To avoid becoming too tamasic, it's essential to minimize indulgence in passive activities like excessive TV-watching or sleep. Instead, try to engage in physical labor or mentally stimulating tasks to maintain balance.

The Pendulum of the Mind:

As we indulge in leisure activities, we must be mindful not to let our attachments sway the pendulum of our mind too far. Too much excitement and pleasure can lead to great sadness and frustration when we cannot continue to experience these moments. To find peace, we must accept less excitement and learn to balance our indulgences.

Brahmacharya:

In yoga philosophy, Brahmacharya is a principle that goes beyond sexual abstinence. Instead, it aims to curb our indulgences in overall and help maintain a clear, focused mind. When indulging in leisure, remember to keep this principle in mind to maintain balance and avoid destructive tendencies.
