Expert Insights on Athletic Training from Top-Tier Competitor Braden Currie
In the picturesque town of Wanaka, nestled in the heart of New Zealand's South Island, lies a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. One such athlete is Braden Currie, a triathlete, multi-sport, and adventure athlete who calls this stunning location home.
Braden's passion for trail running is evident in his training regimen, which sees him dedicating 30-40 hours each week. He believes that long trail runs are not only beneficial for his physical fitness but also for his mental health and training.
When it comes to his favourite trails in Wanaka, Braden has a few standouts. The Motatapu Track into the Fern Burn hut, a challenging 16km run, offers technical terrain and is perfect for hot weather. The Grandview Mountain Track, another 18km trail, is a great option for windy conditions and boasts breathtaking views over Lake Hawea. The Millenium track, a faster trail at 12km, is protected from the wind in most parts, making it an ideal choice for a variety of weather conditions.
For those seeking a more leisurely hike, the Mount Isthmus track, a 16km long trail, is more of a hike than a run. This trail is steep from beginning to end and offers incredible views across Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. It's important to note that while the Rob Roy Track, another beautiful 10km trail, has recently been worked on, it remains wide and not very technical.
The Breast Hill track is another option, although it varies in distance. The first ascent is very technical and more of a scramble.
When venturing into the mountains, safety is paramount. Braden carries a specific set of items with him, including a Macpac Amp Ultra 10litre running vest, Garmin Inreach mini, e-perb, rain jacket, geotech long sleeve thermal and pants, gloves, hat, first aid kit with a survival blanket, food, water, and Radix dehydrated food.
