Belfast - A boy from Ballymurphy, Belfast, has been battling a heart condition for nearly his entire life. Amidst the daunting journey and the continuous wait for a compatible heart, Daithí Mac Gabhann receives a glimmer of hope from a very unusual source.

This extraordinary figure is former President Bill Clinton, who recently penned a heartfelt letter to Daithí, offering words of inspiration and admiration.

The Donate4Daithi campaign, launched in support of the youngster, posted the touching letter on its Instagram. The caption reads, "An 8-year-old's letter from a 78-year-old? Not every day you get a letter from a former U.S. President in Ballymurphy!" followed by a heart emoji.

The letter reveals that Daithí's father reached out to Clinton, informing him that the boy had been added to the "Freedom of Belfast" list – a special honor given to individuals who have made substantial contributions to their country. Clinton expressed his pride in sharing this recognition with Daithí.

It's worth noting that increasing organ donation rates is a hot topic in Belfast City Council, with initiatives such as Dáithi’s Law pushing for an opt-out system for adults.

A Letter Full of Encouragement

"I understand the fear that a heart operation can bring, and I am incredibly impressed by the courage you've shown throughout your life," Clinton writes in the letter.

The 42nd President of the United States expresses his desire to meet Daithí face-to-face when he next visits Belfast. Until then, he sends his support from New York.

Upon receiving the letter at home, the family was speechless. Daithí's father shared with BBC that he couldn't believe Clinton would write to them. And Daithí himself was equally astonished. "He knew it was a big deal...he couldn't believe it... even cried a bit," shared Máirtín Mac Gabhann.

Not only did the letter arrive at the right moment; it arrived when Daithí was back in the hospital. The encouraging words no doubt provided a powerful boost of energy during a challenging period.

As a footnote, the arrival of Clinton's letter is reminiscent of the 2023 occasion when Daithí advocated for changes in organ donation laws and received the Freedom of Belfast award from the city council.
