Enhance the urban environment of our town

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Germany, under the leadership of SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has adopted a comprehensive strategy to combat the virus, with a focus on vaccination, particularly booster shots, and introducing clearer thresholds for anti-pandemic measures based on hospitalization rates rather than just infection incidence.

The new strategy, which took shape from late 2021 into 2022, emphasizes booster vaccinations as a central measure to reduce severe illness and hospitalizations, especially in light of the Omicron variant. Hospitalizations per 100,000 residents have been established as the primary benchmark for escalating public health restrictions. Specific thresholds have been set, including operating public leisure facilities under the "2G" rule (only vaccinated or recovered individuals allowed) when hospitalizations exceed 3 per 100,000, and the "2G+" rule (vaccinated/recovered plus a negative test) when they exceed 6 per 100,000.

The government has also taken steps to address vaccine hesitancy, with around one quarter of Germans initially unvaccinated at the start of Scholz's chancellorship. Public campaigns and mandates in critical sectors like healthcare have been employed to encourage vaccination. In early 2022, a partial vaccine mandate was implemented for health workers.

The Scholz government has also managed concurrent issues such as the energy crisis, showing a broader focus on social protection measures. The pandemic response is part of a transition toward treating COVID-19 as an endemic disease requiring sustainable public health management rather than prolonged emergency states.

Meanwhile, in the city of Oberhausen, the SPD city council has been actively shaping the city and addressing the challenges of the pandemic. The residents are managing the current situation with pragmatism, but it's important to note that these problems cannot be solved locally alone. All members of society must translate hard-won insights into practical action.

The German Armed Forces have come to Oberhausen to support the administration in tracing contacts and identifying potential infection routes. The SPD city council has also founded a city development company to gain influence over the city's development and is developing a city-wide senior support plan based on a social democratic discussion paper.

The city is also preparing for the opening of a new comprehensive school, which will provide the best conditions to equip children for a complex, ever-changing world. However, the task is challenging, particularly for the new comprehensive school in the east of Oberhausen.

The city council wishes the residents of Oberhausen a happy and healthy New Year 2022. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the doctors, medical staff, helpers, and organizers of the numerous vaccination campaigns throughout the city.

Despite the efforts, there are people in Oberhausen for whom optimism has faded due to burdens from regulations, empty order books, and financial hardships. However, the new federal government is expected to provide tools to combat the pandemic and support those in need.
