Born on June 8, 1925, in Iserlohn, Prof. Ulrich Gerlach, a renowned figure in the annals of University Medicine Munster, celebrates his 100th birthday today. Moving to Munster as a child, Gerlach embarked on his medical journey, overcoming hurdles such as military service and captivity to complete his studies in 1951. His groundbreaking dissertation on the impact of penicillin set the stage for his impressive career.
Gerlach's career took off at the skin clinic in Munster, where he later delved into internal medicine, honing his skills in Hamburg. He spent periods in esteemed institutions like the Rockefeller University in New York, before returning to Munster to habilitate in 1961 with a pioneering work on enzyme diagnostics in internal diseases. This marked a crucial step in the development of laboratory medicine, particularly with the introduction of the enzyme SODH, which revolutionized liver diagnostics.
Prof. Gerlach's research focused on the connective tissue metabolism of the liver, notably in liver fibrosis. A respected expert in metabolic diseases and gastroenterology, he was appointed to the newly created chair of internal medicine in 1974, and as director of Medical Clinic B two years later, a post he held until his emeritus in 1990. Simultaneously, he led the Leibniz Institute for Arteriosclerosis Research on a voluntary basis.
Known for his dedication to the well-being and recovery of his patients, Gerlach also shared his extensive knowledge with zeal as head of the nursing school and the school for diet assistants. Prof. Jonel Trebicka, today's director of the clinic B, fondly recalls, "He was very popular among his colleagues, employees and students."
