Unveiled for the first time, research reveals the potential toll of the "Dieselgate" affair on human lives. Auto manufacturers deceitfully concealed vehicle emissions levels of nitrogen oxide particles, leading to an approximate 16,000 deaths in France between 2009 and 2024 due to these unacknowledged releases.

France's Dieselgate Scandal: A Potential Public Health Crisis

A specialist organization focusing on air quality has explored the health impact of manipulated diesel engines, which exceed European emission standards. The researchers estimate that these engines, in operation since 2009 in France, have resulted in 16,000 premature deaths.

Anne Lassman-Trappier, air quality and mobility advisor at France Nature Environnement, contends that inadequate government response could have prevented tens of thousands of deaths. French manufacturers have so far remained silent in response to requests from France Télévisions. As of now, the Ministry of Health is investigating the matter but desires an independent and thorough review from Public Health France.

In September 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency accused Volkswagen of deceptive practices regarding nitrogen oxides emissions control, resulting in the CEO's resignation. Investigations were initiated against Renault, Fiat Chrysler, and PSA, all of whom faced charges. By June 2023, the former Audi CEO, convicted in Germany, admitted to the fraud. However, in France, there have been no imposed sanctions.

While further investigations and legal actions are underway in Europe regarding Dieselgate, the French government has not taken any specificaction in recent reports. Environmental organizations continue to urge faster and more effective response from governments to address the ongoing environmental and health implications of the scandal.

The scientific community, in collaboration, is examining the impact of manipulated diesel engines on French health and environmental-science, given the French Dieselgate Scandal. Anne Lassman-Trappier, an advocate for air quality and mobility at France Nature Environnement, urges for increased attention to this issue in science and health-and-wellness sectors, suggesting that a more proactive government response could prevent further complications related to medical-conditions and public health.
