DeFrontera Launches to Revolutionize African Health Journalism

DeFrontera, a new media outlet, has emerged with a mission to produce impactful health stories that resonate with communities, policymakers, and global audiences. Led by experienced health journalists, it aims to fill a gap in African media with sustained, evidence-driven reporting.

Founded by Verah Okeyo and Anne Mawathe, DeFrontera sets itself apart from traditional newsrooms. Okeyo, serving as chief executive and publisher, brings a blend of global health reporting and leadership experience from health non-profit Jhpiego and the Nation Media Group. Mawathe, as editor-in-chief, leverages her decades of experience at Reuters and the BBC to transform complex health data into engaging narratives.

DeFrontera's approach is distinct, focusing on diverse and underreported perspectives and formats. It seeks to create public impact stories, reaching decision-makers and explaining why health data matters. Its reporting has covered systemic failures in maternal health programs, successful protocols reducing maternal deaths, the resurgence of deadly parasitic diseases, and innovative 'one health' initiatives. Unlike legacy newsrooms, DeFrontera prioritizes health stories, invests in quality reporting, and employs a 'circular economy' for content reuse and audience targeting.

DeFrontera, under the leadership of Verah Okeyo and Anne Mawathe, is poised to revolutionize health journalism in Africa. By producing long-form, deeply reported health stories and differing from traditional newsrooms in its approach, it aims to create meaningful impact and engage audiences with compelling health narratives.
